English Summer ProjectBy: Andrea Betanco

Week 1: June 1-7
Prom Guests
These first summer days were busy days, because my senior sister Mafer was graduating and she invited her U.S. friends over to her prom. They stayed at my house, and I had to help my family by hosting them. Their names are Matt and Chandler, and she met them when she traveled to the Sturgis exchange in Boston. Since they don’t speak a lot of Spanish, I had to communicate with them using the English language. It was a little weird to talk to them because I had to translate words that I didn’t even know that existed in the English language. Matt and Chandler loved Honduras, even though it was not their first time here. I had to translate a lot of conversations between them and Honduran people. I hope they enjoyed their stay at my house, because certainly I loved to host them.(157 words)

Week 2: June 8 - 14
Worldcup 2010 "Enthusiasm"!
(and music downlading too)

The world cup started when I was in Miami. The first game was between South Africa and Mexico, and I “watched it” in the hotel. I must admit that it didn’t take long before the English narrations of the game bored me. I wish I could say that I actually watched the game, but that would be a lie. I fell asleep because the narrators barely described what was going on. My boredom overpowered me. I consider this part of the project because I listened to the narrator’s words... for a while. Thank God that I am back in Honduras, because I want to watch the narrations in Spanish. They are more descriptive and entertaining. It would be a shame to fall asleep in the game between Honduras and Chile today at 5am. Oh, by the way… it’s currently 2:25 a.m. and I am waiting for the game. Don’t worry. I am not going to wait till 5 a.m. by myself because my friend Leana plans to stay up with me. Even now at this hour we are practicing our English-listening skills by sending each other good music with lyrics in English. (English songs are better than songs in Spanish). The game will start in just a few hours, but while we wait we will listen to our songs. Let's hope for the best today! :)

FMYLIFE.COM
Warning! humans might seem quite stupid

external image capture9_28_56.jpgDuring this week I wanted to do something different that proved that I have been practicing my english. No, I am not about to write about facebook (even though I have been using it). Instead, I read a few fml blogs in www.fmylife.com. Why? Because I wanted to laugh at people’s random and fail-like stories. It worked. These entries on the fml blog seem to make the human race look stupid and foul-languaged (sometimes their comments were a bit offensive).
I did not know that people lived through huge epic fails.

An example is this FML, which proves my point:

Today, I woke up late for an exam. I needed to pee and get dressed, so I had the brilliant idea of putting my clothes on while on the toilet. Lifting my legs made me miss the toilet, and I peed all over the only uniform I had that wasn't in the wash. FML

Seriously!? “brilliant idea”? I don’t think so haha. Who would ever do that? ... Besides this guy? (I am pretty sure it’s a guy, but I’d rather not think about that). It is disgusting, but this proves that the epic fails I’ve lived through are not as bad as I thought they were. This is another FML that caught my attention:

Today, I left home only to find that someone had stolen my car. They took it on a joy ride which consisted of getting the passenger mirror knocked off, and hitting a tree head on, which caused the bumper to fall off. But hey, at least they brought it back. With seemingly half a tree underneath. FML

To be honest, that must have sucked. I this were me, I would have LOVED the person who stole my car to forget about returning it. I hope he had his car insured. If he didn’t… well, hahaha. This FML also proves that humans seem brainless because of them. If you steal a car, take it with you. Returning it is considered a wasted effort… even if it was crashed into a tree, had no bumper, its mirrors were broken, and had a tree trunk below it. Robbers should consider learning to drive before they crash their stolen cars.

GivesMeHope.com The pride of love and hope

I was navigating my internet pages when a webpage signaled that GivesMeHope.com was opposed to Fmylife.com. It talked about optimism and the brightness of life. I took a look at a few posts and I loved them. I know it is fun to laugh at FML's, but reading GMH's is so much better. Reading GMH's makes you feel different. It changed my perspective about many things. It contains real-life stories and issues that we face at hard times and the greatness of good times. I couldn't help but smile after reading each post. To be honest, I don't know how to describe it. All I can say is that it made me feel joyful. I was glad to confirm the fact that people surrounding us are not all cold and uncaring. We don't live in a cruel world after all. Goodness lives among us, and tiny acts and events like the ones posted on GMH prove there is pride in love and hope.

These are many of my favorite posts from www.GivesMeHope.com:

An elderly woman fell while walking today.
As I was pulling into the parking lot I saw a teenage boy with his pants down low, his hat to the side and headphones in, rush over and help her up, in front of his friends.
His random act of kindness GMH.

At my senior prom, a lesbian couple was crowned Queen and Queen - something that has never happened in the history of our school system.
The entire senior class stood up, cheered and applauded.
Our school's acceptance GMH.

Being in the back corner of the library was lonely, so I wrote on the wall "You're beautiful" for the next person who had to sit there.
Months later, I came back someone had scribbled "not" into the sentence.
Someone else had crossed it out and written "always."
People continuing messages GMH.

One day I passed a woman walking two dogs.
One was missing a leg, but they were both limping. I asked what happened.
She explained that the injured dog had lost his leg, and that the other dog was copying him so he wouldn't feel alone.
Caring pets GMH

I'm 19 years old, and I've never had a sip of alcohol or a drag of a cigarette.
I will never touch a drug, and I am waiting until marriage to have sex.
What I'm most proud of? The complete respect I am given from everyone who meets me.
Having the confidence to be who I am and love who I am with the encouragement of my friends GMH.

I had cancer 2 years ago, and lost all my hair to chemo.
I was dreading going back to school after being isolated in the hospital for 3 months.
The day I went back to school I discovered my entire 8th grade class of 56, both girls and boys, had shaved their heads.
Their empathy GMH.

I woke up at 6 this morning and found my son gone, with a note saying he will be back later.
He had BIKED to his best friend's house, normally a 40 minute DRIVE, with a cake he baked himself. Why? His best friend's mom had died in an accident that night.
Teenager's commitment to friendship GMH.

Week 4: June 22 - 28
The Bounty Hunter
019.JPG

I recently watched the movie The Bounty Hunter because Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler are of my favorite actors. This movie narrates what I believe to be a story of love at second-sight. A bounty hunter whose name is Milo finds out that his next task is to persecute his ex-wife and take her to jail. I consider it love at second sight because the “hunter” (Milo) persecutes the “criminal” (Nicole) and they used to be married. At first they act as if they hate one another and they insult each other. At some point, Milo finds out that Nicole was being tracked down by villains who were willing to kill her because she was working on news reports that could take them directly to jail. Instead of taking his ex to jail like he was supposed to, he saves Nicole’s life. At the end of the movie, they tell each other how much they missed their marriage and they admitted their mistakes. Milo caught Nicole off guard when they stopped next to the police station and she was taken to jail. Nicole gets a little upset but a few moments later Milo leaves the station and punches a police guard in order to spend the night in jail with Nicole. They fell in love again, so it’s kind of like falling for one another for a second time. I enjoyed watching this movie. It was really good.
